For hobbyists and engineers dealing with loads over 100W, precision in component selection is critical.

 


🔧 The Solution: Match Specs to Your Power Needs

 

The key is to select components based on voltage, current, and switching speed. For example, if your SMPS handles 24V and 5A output (120W), you’ll need a MOSFET rated for at least 150% of the current (7.5A) and voltage (35–40V) with a low Rds(on) for efficiency.

 


🧰 Practical Example: Building a 150W Power Supply

 

Let’s say you’re making a 12V/12.5A power supply for LED lighting:

  • Power = 12V × 12.5A = 150W

  • Choose a MOSFET rated for >20A, 30V, and fast switching

  • Use a Schottky diode for rectification to minimize loss

 


🧮 Sample Calculation

 

Using a MOSFET with Rds(on) = 0.05Ω and current = 12.5A:

Power Loss = I² × R = 12.5² × 0.05 = 7.81W

Opt for lower Rds(on) to reduce heat and need for cooling.
