SMPS Efficiency Benchmarking – Made in India Guide

SMPS efficiency benchmarking

⚠️ The Problem :

Switched-Mode Power Supplies (SMPS) are popular for powering electronic projects due to their compact size and efficiency. But not all SMPS units are equal—some waste a lot of power as heat, especially under partial loads. Benchmarking efficiency helps you choose the right SMPS and design energy-conscious circuits.

✅ The Solution :

Efficiency benchmarking involves measuring how much power goes into the SMPS versus how much comes out. A good SMPS should be at least 80–90% efficient under normal operating conditions. You can improve efficiency by using high-quality MOSFETs and low-ESR capacitors in your designs.

🧰 Practical Example :

Say you’re building a 12V, 2A IoT power hub using an SMPS. You measure 27W input from AC and only 22W output.
Efficiency = (Output/Input) × 100 = (22/27) × 100 ≈ 81%
Not bad—but you can upgrade components or switch to a better design for higher efficiency.

📐 Sample Calculation :

Let’s calculate power loss:
Power loss = Input – Output = 27W – 22W = 5W
That 5W is wasted as heat! Choosing better components improves this.
