When building circuits, one common issue is reverse voltage—when power is connected to a circuit in the wrong direction. This can cause components like ICs or microcontrollers to burn out, leaving your project in ruins. Fortunately, reverse voltage protection is easy to implement with a Zener diode.
A Zener diode allows current to flow in the forward direction like a regular diode, but it also has a special property: it can safely block current if the voltage is too high in the reverse direction. This makes it a perfect solution to prevent reverse voltage from damaging your circuit.
Imagine you’re powering a small Arduino-based project. If you accidentally connect the battery in reverse, your components might be fried. By adding a Zener diode in the circuit, you can protect the board. The Zener diode will allow current to flow only in the correct direction and block reverse current.
If your circuit operates at 5V and you use a 1N4007 Zener diode with a breakdown voltage of 5.1V, the diode will not conduct under normal conditions. But if the voltage rises above 5.1V (due to reverse connection), the Zener diode will start conducting, protecting your components.
