Reverse Voltage Protection for 48V Rails

reverse voltage protection

🔧 The Problem :

Reverse voltage can instantly damage sensitive components on your 48V power rail—especially in industrial or robotics applications where connectors might be inserted incorrectly. For beginners and prototypers, this can mean blown ICs or fried PCBs.

✅ The Solution :

To avoid this, use reverse polarity protection. One of the most efficient methods is using a P-channel MOSFET with its source connected to the 48V input. Unlike diodes, this method has minimal voltage drop and heat loss, making it ideal for higher-voltage designs.

🔍 Practical Example :

Imagine you’ve built a 48V-powered CNC control board. Accidentally connecting the supply in reverse could destroy your whole system. But with a P-MOSFET (like IRF9540), current flows only when the polarity is correct—saving your hardware.

📐 Sample Calculation :

Let’s say your load draws 2A and you’re using a P-MOSFET with Rds(on) = 0.05Ω:

Power loss = I² × R = 2² × 0.05 = 0.2W

Much lower than a diode (0.7V × 2A = 1.4W loss)!

🛒 Product Suggestion :

Use quality MOSFETs or TVS diodes, made right here in India:
