Reverse Protection with Active Rectifiers: Simple Fix for Common Circuit Issue

Reverse Protection

As electronics hobbyists, engineers, and prototypers, we often encounter the issue of reverse voltage—when the polarity of the power supply is accidentally flipped, damaging our circuits. This is where reverse protection comes in, and active rectifiers offer a reliable solution.

The Problem :

When power is reversed in a circuit, components like diodes usually prevent current from flowing. However, this can lead to power loss and inefficiency. A simple diode might not perform well, especially in high-current applications. The result? Loss of energy and possible component damage.

The Solution :

Active rectifiers use MOSFETs (metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors) to perform the rectification process more efficiently. They replace diodes, providing lower voltage drop and less energy wasted. Active rectifiers allow current to flow in the correct direction only, protecting your circuit from reverse polarity.

Practical Example :

Imagine you’re prototyping a solar-powered device. If the panel is wired incorrectly, a diode might stop the current, but with a significant power loss. By using an active rectifier, you ensure that power is routed correctly with minimal loss, improving the efficiency of your design.

Sample Calculation :

Let’s assume you have a 12V input and use a diode with a 0.7V forward voltage drop.

If your circuit requires 1A of current, the power loss across the diode would be:

Power Loss = Voltage Drop x Current = 0.7V x 1A = 0.7W

Switching to an active rectifier, with minimal voltage drop (around 0.2V), would reduce this loss to:

Power Loss = 0.2V x 1A = 0.2W

This results in a 71% reduction in power loss, making your circuit far more efficient.
