Reverse Protection Using Ideal Diodes

Reverse protection

As an electronics enthusiast or engineer, you may have encountered the issue of reverse voltage damage in your circuits. This happens when power is connected incorrectly, causing components to burn out. Reverse protection is essential to prevent this from happening, and one effective solution is using ideal diodes.

The Problem :

When the power supply is connected in reverse, traditional diodes can protect the circuit but cause voltage drops, reducing efficiency. Ideal diodes, however, act as perfect switches—allowing current flow in the correct direction but blocking it entirely in reverse, without any voltage drop. This ensures that your circuit stays safe and functions optimally.

Practical Example :

Imagine you’re working on a battery-powered project, and you accidentally connect the battery backwards. Without reverse protection, this could destroy your circuit. By integrating an ideal diode, the circuit will automatically block the reverse current, preventing damage. In this scenario, the ideal diode effectively “switches off” the reverse connection and allows only proper current flow.

Sample Calculation :

Let’s say the power supply is 12V, and the load draws 500mA.

The ideal diode should handle at least 12V and 500mA.

You’d select a MOSFET with a voltage rating higher than 12V and a current rating of at least 500mA to ensure proper reverse protection without overheating or damage.
