Reverse Protection in UPS Systems – Why It Matters

Reverse protection in UPS systems

❗ The Problem: Reverse Battery Connection Destroys Components

Many hobbyists connect lead-acid or Li-ion batteries to a UPS circuit. But connecting the battery backward, even for a second, can blow up components or start a fire. It’s an easy error that causes expensive damage.

🛠️ The Solution : Use a Diode or P-Channel MOSFET

A basic fix is placing a Schottky diode in series with the battery, but that wastes power. A better method? Use a P-Channel MOSFET with proper orientation to block current in reverse polarity, without voltage drop during normal operation.

🔋 Real-World Example + Simple Calculation

Say your UPS draws 5A. A Schottky diode with a 0.4V drop will waste:

Power = V × I = 0.4V × 5A = 2W – that’s wasted as heat!

Instead, a properly configured P-Channel MOSFET drops just ~0.05V, saving power and heat.
