Reverse Protection for Audio Amplifiers: A Simple Fix for Your DIY Projects

Reverse Protection

When building audio amplifiers, one of the common issues engineers and hobbyists face is reverse polarity damage. This happens when the power supply is connected backward, sending current in the wrong direction, which can fry sensitive components. Fortunately, adding reverse protection is an easy and cost-effective fix to prevent this from happening.

The Problem :

Audio amplifiers are designed to work with specific voltage polarities. If you accidentally reverse the power supply, it can cause irreversible damage. But don’t worry—this can be easily avoided by adding a diode or MOSFET for reverse polarity protection.

Example :

Imagine you’re assembling a new audio amplifier for your DIY home speaker system. You connect everything, but in a hurry, you connect the power supply with reverse polarity. Without protection, this could destroy your amplifier’s internal circuitry. By adding a simple diode in series with the power input, you can ensure that current only flows in the correct direction, saving your project from costly damage.

The Solution :

Here’s a simple way to calculate the protection needed for your circuit:

  • Let’s say your amplifier runs on 12V DC.
  • Use a diode like 1N4007 (rated for 1A and 1000V).
  • Ensure the diode is placed in series with the positive terminal of the power supply.

This way, if the polarity is wrong, the diode blocks the current, preventing any damage.

Sample Calculation :

You have a 12V DC power supply, and you want to use a 1N4007 diode (forward voltage drop of 0.7V) to protect your audio amplifier with a load resistance of 10 ohms.

Current (I) = (V_supply – V_f) / R

  • Vsupply=12V
  • (diode forward voltage drop)
  • R=10Ω

I = (12V – 0.7V) / 10Ω = 11.3V / 10Ω = 1.13A

The current through the diode will be 1.13A.

Since the 1N4007 diode can handle up to 1A, it will work for this setup as long as the current does not exceed the diode’s rating.
