Reverse Protection for 5V Systems – Save Your Circuit!
⚠️ The Problem :
Reversing power connections in 5V systems—like Arduino or sensor modules—is a common mistake among hobbyists. Just one slip and your microcontroller, display, or sensor is fried! Many beginners don’t realize that even momentary reverse voltage can cause permanent damage.
🔧 The Solution :
The fix is simple: add reverse polarity protection using either a Schottky diode or a P-channel MOSFET. Schottky diodes are easy to use and cheap, while P-MOSFETs offer better efficiency with almost no voltage drop.
🧪 Practical Example :
Let’s say you’re powering a DIY sensor module with a 5V adapter. You accidentally reverse the plug. Without protection, your components could be destroyed. But with a SS14 Schottky diode in series, reverse voltage is blocked. Or, use a P-channel MOSFET with its source to +5V—this allows current only in the correct direction, with minimal loss.
📐 Sample Calculation :
Using a SS14 Schottky with 0.3V drop:
Effective voltage to the circuit = 5V – 0.3V = 4.7V
This is still safe for most 5V logic components.
