Reverse polarity is a common issue when connecting power to 5G modules, especially during rapid prototyping or DIY projects. Accidentally swapping the positive and negative terminals can damage sensitive components, leading to costly repairs or replacements. Fortunately, adding a reverse polarity protection circuit is a simple and effective solution.
The easiest way to prevent reverse polarity damage is by using a Schottky diode or a P-channel MOSFET in series with the power supply. A Schottky diode blocks reverse current flow, while a P-channel MOSFET offers lower voltage drop and better efficiency.
Imagine connecting a 5V power supply to your 5G module but accidentally reversing the terminals. Without protection, this could damage the internal circuitry. By placing a 1N5819 Schottky diode in series with the power line, you prevent reverse current from flowing, protecting the module.
To select the right diode, ensure it handles the module’s current. If your 5G module consumes 1A at 5V, the power dissipated by the diode is:
P=Vf×I=0.4V×1A=0.4W
A 1N5819 diode with a 1A rating and low forward voltage drop is ideal.
