If you’re building or repairing drones, one common mistake that can cause a major headache is reversing the polarity of your power supply. This occurs when the positive and negative connections are swapped, potentially damaging your sensitive electronics. But don’t worry! The Problem : 

Drones are powered by batteries, which have a positive (+) and negative (-) terminal. If the power leads are connected in reverse—say, you connect the negative lead to the positive terminal—the result can be catastrophic. Components like flight controllers, ESCs (electronic speed controllers), and motors may get damaged.

The Solution :

One easy solution is to use a diode in series with the power supply. A diode only allows current to flow in one direction, ensuring that if the polarity is reversed, it won’t damage the system. Alternatively, you can use MOSFETs for a more efficient and reliable approach, as they can handle higher currents and reduce voltage drops.

Practical Example :

Imagine you’re working on a drone and accidentally connect the battery in reverse. Without reverse polarity protection, the flight controller will fry. But, with a simple diode or MOSFET in place, the reverse connection will safely stop the current from flowing, saving your components!

Sample Calculation :

Let’s say you’re using a 5V power supply and a diode with a forward voltage drop of 0.7V.

The power loss in the system will be approximately:

P=V×I=0.7V×0.2A=0.14W

This small power loss is a fair trade for preventing major damage.
