When building electronic circuits, you might have encountered the challenge of controlling a device that needs to switch on or off based on a low signal. This is where a MOSFET low-side switch comes into play. Essentially, it allows you to control the flow of electricity to a load (like a motor or LED) by grounding it rather than using a high voltage. It’s often used in scenarios where switching a device from a ground connection is more efficient and easier to implement than switching from a positive supply.
If you’re switching a high-power load with an ordinary switch, it could be inefficient or difficult to control, especially when dealing with higher currents or voltages. The low-side MOSFET switch offers a clean and efficient solution by using the MOSFET’s properties to allow a load to be controlled via a low voltage on the gate, making the switching action faster and safer.
Imagine you want to control a 12V motor using a simple switch. If you use a low-side MOSFET switch, the MOSFET sits between the motor and ground, allowing you to control the motor with a simple signal, like from a microcontroller or a simple circuit. When you apply a low voltage to the gate of the MOSFET, the circuit closes and the motor runs. Remove the signal, and the motor stops.
Suppose the motor draws 1A of current at 12V.
The power consumed by the motor is:
Power (P) = Voltage (V) × Current (I) = 12V × 1A = 12W
Thus, your MOSFET needs to be able to handle at least 12W of power dissipation.
You can choose a MOSFET with low Rds(on) to minimize losses, making your circuit more efficient.
