Mastering SMPS Load Sharing Design for Stable Power Supply

The Problem :

 

Switch Mode Power Supplies (SMPS) are widely used in electronics, but when multiple SMPS units power a single load, balancing the load between them becomes tricky. Uneven load sharing can lead to overheating, reduced efficiency, and shorter lifespan of the power supply units.

 

The Solution :

 

To ensure load sharing, you can use diode isolation or an active current-sharing controller. A simple way is to add small value resistors (0.1–0.5 ohms) in series with each output. This forces the supplies to share the load equally.

 

Example : 

 

Imagine powering a 12V, 5A LED strip with two 12V, 3A SMPS units. Without load sharing, one supply might handle more load, causing imbalance. To prevent this, add 0.1-ohm resistors to each supply’s output. The voltage drop ensures balanced current flow, protecting the supplies from overload.

 

Sample Calculation : 

 

For a 3A load, the power dissipated by a 0.1-ohm resistor would be:

P=I2×R=32×0.1=0.9W

A 1W resistor would be suitable here.

Ensure these resistors are rated for the required current and power.
