SMPS Efficiency at Heavy Loads – Easy Fixes

SMPS efficiency at heavy loads

⚡ The Problem: SMPS Efficiency Drops Under Heavy Loads

Switched Mode Power Supplies (SMPS) are known for their high efficiency—but at heavy loads, they can overheat, become noisy, or drop efficiency drastically. This happens due to increased switching losses, thermal stress, and undersized components like inductors or MOSFETs.

🔧 The Solution: Upgrade Key Components for Better Load Handling

To maintain high efficiency, especially above 70–80% load, you should:

  • Use low Rds(on) MOSFETs to minimize conduction losses

  • Upgrade to larger inductors and capacitors to reduce ripple

  • Improve heat dissipation with heatsinks or thermal pads

These small tweaks can prevent overheating and maximize output without wasting power.

🧪 Practical Example: SMPS for 12V LED Strip

You’re powering a 5-meter 12V LED strip drawing 3A from a 12V SMPS. The SMPS gets hot and dims slightly.

Fix: Replace standard MOSFET with a low Rds(on) model and add a small heatsink. Efficiency improves, and the strip stays bright and stable.

🔢 Sample Calculation: Power Loss in MOSFET

If Rds(on) = 0.2Ω and current = 3A:

P = I² × R = 9 × 0.2 = 1.8W lost as heat.

Using a 0.05Ω MOSFET reduces it to 0.45W—a big win for efficiency!

🧰 Product Suggestion: Made in India Components

Use MOSFETs and heatsinks made in India for better thermal and power performance.
