Reverse Voltage Protection for Audio – Save Your Speakers!

Reverse voltage protection for audio

⚠️ The Problem :

In audio amplifier circuits, especially DIY builds, it’s easy to accidentally reverse the power supply polarity. Even a momentary slip can damage op-amps, speakers, or capacitors—leading to distorted sound or total failure. Audio components are often sensitive and expensive, so reverse voltage protection is a must.

✅ The Solution :

The simplest fix is to use a Schottky diode like the 1N5819 in series with the power line. It allows current to flow only in the correct direction. For better efficiency (less voltage drop), you can use a P-channel MOSFET as a high-side switch for reverse protection.

🔍 Practical Example :

Let’s say you’re building a TDA2030-based audio amplifier powered by a 12V adapter. You plug the adapter in reverse by mistake—without protection, the amp IC fries. Add a 1N5819 diode on the VCC line. If polarity is wrong, the diode blocks the current—saving your amp and your wallet!

🧮 Sample Calculation :

If your amp draws 1A:

  • Voltage drop across 1N5819 ≈ 0.4V

  • P=V×I=0.4V×1A=0.4W

  • Use a 1W-rated diode or higher for safety.
