Power factor correction (PFC) is a critical but often overlooked aspect of designing and using Switched-Mode Power Supplies (SMPS). Power factor refers to the ratio of real power (used to perform work) to apparent power (total power supplied). A low power factor means wasted energy, which can lead to overheating, reduced efficiency, and increased electricity bills.

 

The Problem :

 

In simple terms, when your SMPS draws power from the AC grid, it may not do so efficiently. This can be caused by an inductive load or the type of circuit design. Without proper correction, the device uses more current than necessary, wasting energy.

 

The Solution :

 

To fix this, you can add a power factor correction circuit that improves the efficiency of power delivery. The solution typically involves using a PFC controller and a boost converter to ensure that the input current is in sync with the voltage waveform.

 

Practical Example :

 

Imagine you’re building a power supply for a hobby project. Without PFC, your SMPS will use more current, increasing both heat and energy consumption. By integrating a PFC circuit, your project will become more energy-efficient, reducing both operational costs and heat generation.

 

Sample Calculation :

 

For a 100W SMPS with a 0.7 power factor:

  • Apparent power = 100W / 0.7 = 142.85 VA
  • With PFC, you can improve the power factor to 1.0, reducing apparent power consumption to 100 VA.
