SMPS Noise Reduction Strategies for Electronics Projects

SMPS Noise Reduction

Switch-Mode Power Supplies (SMPS) are commonly used in electronics for efficient power conversion, but they often introduce unwanted noise that can interfere with your circuit’s performance. This noise can manifest as electrical interference, causing erratic behavior in sensitive components like microcontrollers or sensors. But don’t worry—there are simple ways to reduce this noise and improve your design.

Simple Explanation:

The main culprit behind SMPS noise is the rapid switching of transistors inside the power supply. This generates high-frequency electromagnetic interference (EMI), which spreads across your circuit. To combat this, you can use noise filters, capacitors, and proper PCB layout techniques.

Practical Example:

Imagine you’re building a sensor-based project, like a temperature sensor with a display. When you connect an SMPS, you might notice the display flickers or shows random numbers due to noise. By adding a capacitor (like a 100nF ceramic capacitor) across the power supply lines near the sensor, you can smooth out the noise. This is similar to putting a buffer in place to absorb sudden electrical spikes, keeping your sensor signal stable.

Sample Calculation:

Let’s say you need to size a resistor to limit current in a series connection.

If your SMPS outputs 5V and you want to limit the current to 20mA for your sensor:

Use Ohm’s Law:

*  R = V/I

*  R = 5V / 0.02A = 250 ohms. So, a 250-ohm resistor would be appropriate.
