SMPS Input Overvoltage Protection – The Smart Way to Safeguard Your Circuits

SMPS input overvoltage protection

⚠️ The Problem :

In India, power fluctuations are common—and these spikes can easily damage your SMPS (Switched Mode Power Supply) and downstream circuits. If your input voltage exceeds safe limits, components inside your project may burn out or fail instantly.

🛠️ The Solution :

To prevent this, you can add overvoltage protection components like MOVs (Metal Oxide Varistors) or TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression) diodes at the AC input. These components absorb high-voltage surges and clamp them before they reach sensitive circuits.

💡 Practical Example :

Let’s say you’re running a microcontroller-based project with a 230V AC to 12V DC SMPS. If a voltage spike of 400V occurs, your SMPS could blow. But with a 275V MOV, the spike is clamped and your circuit survives.

🧮 Sample Calculation :

  • Indian mains: 230V AC

  • Peak voltage = 230V × √2 ≈ 325V

  • Choose an MOV rated for ~275V AC with a clamping voltage around 350–400V.
This ensures protection without interfering with normal operation.

🛒 Product Suggestion :

Try TVS diodes or MOVs that are reliable and Made in India:
