Imagine you’re building a simple LED driver. You choose a 10 µH inductor with a current rating of 1A. If the inductor’s current rating is too low, it could saturate and cause power loss. By ensuring you pick the correct value, you get a smooth, stable output without the inefficiencies of an undersized inductor.

Let’s say you need to choose an inductor for a 12V, 1A SMPS.

A typical calculation for the inductance value is:

L=f×Iout(VinVout)×Vout

Where:

  • Vin=15VV_{in} = 15V
  • Vout=12VV_{out} = 12V
  • f=100kHzf = 100kHz
  • Iout=1AI_{out} = 1A

Using the formula, the required inductance will be approximately 40 µH.
