Reverse Protection for Embedded Systems: A Simple Guide for Hobbyists and Engineers

Reverse protection

When working with embedded systems, one common mistake can cause damage to your project: connecting power in reverse. This can happen accidentally, whether you’re working on a microcontroller or a motor driver circuit. In such cases, your circuit might be fried, resulting in costly repairs or project failure. Fortunately, reverse protection can help!

The Problem :

Reverse protection ensures that your circuit doesn’t get damaged if you accidentally connect the power supply the wrong way around. It’s a simple yet essential technique, especially when you’re working with components that are sensitive to polarity, like diodes or capacitors.

The Solution :

The most common solution is to use a diode in series with the power supply. This allows current to flow only when the correct polarity is used. If the polarity is reversed, the diode blocks the current, preventing damage.

Example :

Imagine you’re designing a small embedded system powered by a 5V source. If you connect the positive and negative terminals backward, the reverse protection diode will prevent the power from reaching the circuit, keeping everything safe.

Sample Calculation :

Say you use a 1N4007 diode for reverse protection, which has a forward voltage drop of around 0.7V.

If your supply is 5V, the effective voltage reaching your circuit will be

5V – 0.7V = 4.3V ,

which is still enough to power most embedded systems.

Product Suggestion  :

For reverse protection, you can use a Schottky diode or MOSFET. These components offer low voltage drop and high efficiency.
