
USB-C has become the go-to connector for modern electronics, offering fast data transfer and power delivery. However, a common issue in USB-C circuits is reverse current flow, which can cause damage to your components or lead to system failure. Practical Example :
Imagine you’re designing a USB-C-powered circuit to charge a battery. Without reverse current protection, if you plug in the cable the wrong way, the current will flow back into your power supply and could cause it to overheat or fail. By placing a diode with a low forward voltage drop (like a Schottky diode), the reverse current is blocked, preventing damage.
Sample Calculation :
If your circuit operates at 5V and draws 1A, and you use a Schottky diode with a forward voltage drop of 0.2V, the power loss in the diode is:
Power loss = Voltage drop x Current = 0.2V x 1A = 0.2W.
This is minimal but should still be considered for power-efficient designs.
