Low Voltage Smart Camera Power Reference – Keep It Stable!

Smart security cameras, IoT vision modules, and compact embedded systems often require low-voltage, stable power (commonly 3.3V or 5V). If the power supply isn’t clean and precise, the camera may show noise, freeze, or even fail to start—especially in low-light or startup conditions.

Use a Low Dropout Regulator (LDO) or a buck converter with tight voltage tolerance and low ripple. Keep power traces short, decouple with ceramic capacitors close to the camera module, and ensure your reference voltage is well-regulated.

Imagine a DIY home surveillance project using a 5V USB source to power an ESP32-CAM. If the voltage drops below 4.8V during Wi-Fi transmission, the camera reboots. Adding a 3.3V LDO with a proper capacitor network prevents this issue and stabilizes your project.
🔢 Sample Calculation :
If your ESP32-CAM draws 250mA peak and you’re using an AMS1117-3.3 LDO:
Power Dissipation = (5V – 3.3V) × 0.25A = 0.425W
Make sure to use a heatsink or thermal pad on the LDO.
