Improve MOSFET Gate Noise Immunity Easily

MOSFET gate noise immunity

⚠️ The Problem: Unwanted Switching Due to Gate Noise

MOSFETs are powerful, but their gates are sensitive to electrical noise. In noisy environments or fast-switching circuits, even a small voltage spike can falsely turn a MOSFET on or off—leading to malfunctions or even component failure.

🔧 The Solution: Add a Gate Resistor + Pull-down

To improve MOSFET gate noise immunity, simply add a gate resistor (typically 100Ω–330Ω) in series and a pull-down resistor (10kΩ) from gate to ground. The series resistor slows fast transitions, while the pull-down ensures the gate stays off when not actively driven.

💡 Practical Example: Motor Driver Circuit

In a homemade DC motor driver using an N-channel MOSFET, switching noise from inductive loads can cause ghost switching. Adding a 220Ω gate resistor and a 10kΩ pull-down resistor makes the gate more stable—no more random starts!

🧮 Sample Calculation: Gate Resistor Selection

Let’s say your MOSFET has a gate charge (Qg) of 20nC, and you want it to switch in 200ns.

Required gate current = Qg / time = 20nC / 200ns = 0.1A

If driving from 5V:

Gate resistor = V / I = 5V / 0.1A = 50Ω

Use 100Ω for added safety.
