When working with sensors in your electronics projects, one common issue that can occur is reversing the polarity of the power supply. This happens when the positive and negative wires are connected the wrong way around, which can damage your sensor permanently. The Problem :
Reverse polarity occurs when you mistakenly connect the power supply terminals of your sensor in reverse. Many electronic components, like sensors, have polarity-sensitive pins, and applying power in the wrong direction can cause them to fail. To avoid this, it’s essential to use reverse polarity protection in your designs.
The Solution :
The easiest way to add reverse polarity protection is by using a diode in series with your sensor’s power input. A diode only allows current to flow in one direction, so if the polarity is reversed, the diode will block the current, preventing damage to your sensor.
Practical Example :
Let’s say you’re building a temperature sensor circuit using a 5V supply. If you accidentally connect the positive and negative wires in reverse, a simple diode can protect your sensor. The diode will prevent current from flowing in the wrong direction, ensuring your sensor doesn’t get damaged.
Sample Calculation :
To size your diode, consider the current your sensor requires.
For instance, if your sensor draws 100mA, choose a diode with a current rating of at least 150% of the sensor’s requirement (i.e., 150mA or higher) to ensure it handles any current surges.
- Sensor current: 100mA
- Diode current rating: 150% x 100mA = 150mA
