When designing power supply circuits, especially Switched-Mode Power Supplies (SMPS), one common issue is overload protection. If the load draws more current than the SMPS can handle, it could cause overheating or even failure of components. The good news? Overload protection is easy to implement and can prevent such problems.
Imagine you’re building a small project, like a DIY LED light strip, and you accidentally add too many LEDs. Your SMPS might not be able to supply enough power, leading to overheating. The solution: overload protection. By adding a current sensing circuit, you can detect when the load exceeds the maximum rating and cut off the power supply to prevent damage.
Let’s say your SMPS is rated for 5V, 2A. If your load exceeds 10W (which is 2A at 5V), the current sensing circuit will activate and shut down the power supply. This prevents your components from burning out.
If the load draws 3A at 5V, the power consumed will be:
P = V x I = 5V x 3A = 15W
This exceeds the 10W limit of the power supply, triggering the overload protection circuit.
