Switch Mode Power Supplies (SMPS) are widely used in electronics, but one common issue is low efficiency, leading to excess heat and power wastage. Understanding how to improve the efficiency of your SMPS can save power, reduce heat, and extend the lifespan of your devices. Let’s break down how to fix this in simple terms.
When an SMPS is inefficient, it wastes energy in the form of heat. This happens due to high switching losses, poor component selection, or inadequate filtering. The result? Higher power consumption and less reliable operation.
To improve SMPS efficiency, use high-quality components like low RDS(on) MOSFETs and fast-switching diodes. These components minimize losses. Additionally, upgrading the output filter capacitor can smooth out voltage spikes, improving performance.
Imagine a mobile charger. If your charger has low-quality MOSFETs or a poor capacitor, the charger may get too hot while charging your phone, reducing its lifespan. Replacing those components with high-efficiency ones will ensure the charger stays cooler and uses less power.
Suppose your SMPS consumes 10W, and the efficiency of your old circuit is 70%.
The power wasted as heat would be: Wasted Power = (1 – Efficiency) × Input Power = (1 – 0.70) × 10W = 3W.
By improving the efficiency to 85%, the wasted power reduces to: Wasted Power = (1 – 0.85) × 10W = 1.5W.
This 1.5W reduction can make a huge difference in performance and heat generation.
