When building electronics projects, one of the most common mistakes is connecting your power supply in reverse. This can damage your components, especially in 12V systems where polarity matters. But don’t worry—reverse polarity protection is an easy fix!
Connecting the positive terminal of your power supply to the negative terminal of your circuit can cause immediate failure. In simple terms, when the power is connected incorrectly, the flow of electricity is reversed, which may burn out sensitive components like ICs, transistors, or even entire circuit boards.
To prevent this, you can add a simple circuit that ensures your components are safe regardless of how the power is connected. One easy way to achieve this is by using a diode in series with your power input. The diode will only allow current to flow in the correct direction, blocking reverse voltage and protecting your circuit.
Imagine you’re building a simple LED light circuit powered by a 12V adapter. If you accidentally swap the positive and negative connections, the LED would burn out immediately. But if you add a diode in series with the power input, the diode will block the reverse current, and your LED will remain safe.
If you use a 1N4007 diode (forward voltage drop of 0.7V) and a 12V supply, the voltage drop across the diode will reduce your circuit voltage to 11.3V (12V – 0.7V).
This is generally acceptable for most components but needs to be considered in power-sensitive applications.
