MOSFETs are key components in SMPS circuits, controlling the switching of voltage and current. If you choose the wrong MOSFET, your circuit could lose efficiency, which may result in excessive heat, lower power output, or even damage the components.

 

A Practical Example :

 

Imagine you’re building a power supply for a DIY project, such as charging a battery pack for a drone. If you use a MOSFET with high Rds(on) (the resistance when the MOSFET is on), the efficiency will drop, and the MOSFET will get hot, reducing your battery’s lifespan. The solution? Choose a MOSFET with a low Rds(on) to reduce power loss.

 

Sample Calculation :

 

To calculate power loss due to a MOSFET’s Rds(on), use the formula:
Power Loss (P) = I² * Rds(on)

For example, if the current (I) is 5A and the Rds(on) is 0.05Ω, the power loss would be:
P = 5² * 0.05 = 1.25W

Choosing a MOSFET with lower Rds(on) would reduce this loss significantly.
