MOSFET Noise Immunity Tips for Beginners

MOSFET Noise Immunity

When working with MOSFETs in your electronic circuits, you might encounter unwanted noise or interference. This can cause erratic behavior, like unexpected switching or malfunctioning. It’s a common issue that can easily be fixed with the right approach.

The Problem :

MOSFETs are sensitive to noise from power lines or nearby components, especially when operating at high frequencies. If your circuit is acting unpredictably or turning on/off by itself, noise might be the culprit.

The Solution :

To tackle this, you can add capacitors across the MOSFET’s gate to ground, which helps filter out high-frequency noise. Adding a pull-down resistor (e.g., 10kΩ) can also ensure the MOSFET remains off when no signal is present.

Practical Example :

Imagine you’re building a simple motor control circuit using a MOSFET. If the motor suddenly turns on or off due to interference, it’s because noise is triggering the MOSFET. By placing a small capacitor (e.g., 0.1µF) and a pull-down resistor (10kΩ) between the gate and ground, you can stabilize the signal and ensure smooth operation.

Sample Calculation :

Let’s say you’re using a 12V system and need to size your pull-down resistor.

With a typical MOSFET gate threshold voltage of 2V, the 10kΩ resistor will keep the gate voltage below this threshold, ensuring the MOSFET stays off when the control signal is not active.
