MOSFET Fault Detection Circuits: Identify and Fix Easily

MOSFET fault detection

The Problem :

MOSFETs (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors) are essential in switching and power control circuits. However, they can fail due to overheating, incorrect gate voltage, or excessive current. A faulty MOSFET may cause short circuits, voltage drops, or complete circuit failure. Identifying a damaged MOSFET early can save your circuit from further issues.

The Solution :

To detect MOSFET faults, use a multimeter in diode mode. Follow these steps:

  1. Check Drain-to-Source: Measure the resistance between the drain and source. A good MOSFET shows high resistance in one direction and low in the other.

  2. Check Gate-to-Source: Check the gate-to-source resistance. An unusually low reading suggests a gate short.

  3. Check for Shorts: If the drain and source show near-zero resistance, the MOSFET is likely shorted and needs replacing.

Practical Example :

Imagine a DC motor control circuit where a MOSFET switches the motor on and off. If the motor doesn’t run or runs erratically, a faulty MOSFET might be the cause. Using a multimeter to check the MOSFET quickly helps identify the issue.

Sample Calculation :

If the motor operates at 12V and draws 3A, the MOSFET must handle:

P=V×I=12V×3A=36W

Choose a MOSFET with at least 50W power handling capacity to ensure safe operation.
