Low Voltage Smart Mirror Power Supply: A Quick Fix for Hobbyists

low voltage smart mirror

The Problem :

Smart mirrors are a fascinating addition to modern homes, but they often face low voltage issues that cause flickering displays or unresponsive touch controls. This usually happens because the power supply cannot provide enough stable voltage for the mirror’s components, especially the LED strips and controller board.

The Solution :

To fix this, ensure that your smart mirror has a regulated power supply capable of delivering the required current. Most smart mirrors use 12V LED strips and a Raspberry Pi or similar microcontroller, which require at least 2A–3A of current. A 12V 5A power adapter is ideal for ensuring stable performance without voltage drops.

Practical Example :

Imagine you’re building a DIY smart mirror powered by a Raspberry Pi and a 12V LED strip. If you use a 12V 1A adapter, the LEDs may flicker when the system boots, as the current is insufficient. Switching to a 12V 5A adapter resolves this by ensuring a constant power supply.

Sample Calculation :

If your LED strip consumes 12W per meter and you have a 2-meter strip, the power needed is:

12W×2=24W

Since Power (W) = Voltage (V) × Current (A), you need :

24W÷12V=2A

To account for the Raspberry Pi and other components, a 12V 5A adapter provides enough margin.
