🔌 The Problem: Why You Need MOSFET Gate Protection

MOSFETs are amazing switches, but their gates are electrostatically sensitive. A stray voltage spike or static discharge can permanently damage the gate oxide layer, rendering the MOSFET useless. This is a common problem in DIY circuits, especially when handling MOSFETs without ESD precautions.

🔧 The Solution: Simple Gate Protection Circuit

A basic way to protect the gate is to add:

  • A resistor (100Ω–330Ω) in series with the gate

  • A Zener diode (typically 15V for standard MOSFETs) from gate to source
    This limits gate voltage and slows fast switching edges, reducing EMI and gate stress.

🧪 Practical Example

Let’s say you’re building a motor driver using an IRFZ44N MOSFET in a 12V system. A direct GPIO connection from an Arduino without protection could lead to failure. Adding a 220Ω gate resistor and a 15V Zener diode extends MOSFET life and stabilizes performance.

📐 Sample Calculation

To limit the inrush current into the gate:

I=RV=220Ω5V22.7mA

This is safe for most microcontroller outputs.
