SMPS Output Noise Reduction Tips – Clean Power for Your Projects!

SMPS Output Noise Reduction Tips

🔋 The Problem :

Smart watches operate on ultra-low voltage and current. A poor power design leads to battery drain, unreliable performance, or even failure to boot. The challenge? Deliver clean, stable voltage in a compact form factor while consuming minimal power.

🛠️ The Solution :

Use low-dropout regulators (LDOs) or buck converters with high efficiency at low loads. Select components with low quiescent current (<1 µA preferred), and minimize leakage paths in your circuit. Also, prioritize energy harvesting if your application includes solar or kinetic sources.

🧩 Practical Example :

Imagine your smart watch runs on a 3.7V Li-ion cell. You need a stable 1.8V for the microcontroller and 3.0V for a BLE module. Instead of using resistors (which waste energy), use a low quiescent buck converter like the TPS62177 to step down efficiently.

🔢 Sample Calculation :

To calculate power usage for the MCU:

P = V × I = 1.8V × 5mA = 9mW

Using an LDO with 90% efficiency vs. a buck converter with 95% efficiency could save 0.5 mW—crucial in always-on designs.
